Faculty Departures: Impact on Student Advising

Faculty Departures: Impact on Student Advising

In the event a faculty member leaves the University or passes away, the academic department, in collaboration with Divisional leadership, will aid any student who was being advised by the faculty member in question with replacement mentorship in research, dissertation committee membership, etc. The Division of the Humanities, with departmental leadership approval, will allow exceptions as needed to dissertation committee composition.

In the event a faculty member retires from the University, they can complete their current advising role for students in a faculty emeritus status. Should this not be warranted for the faculty member in question, the faculty member should plan accordingly to cease advising students in any capacity well in advance of their retirement and/or should initiate a transition plan with the student and other departmental leaders.
