Tom Gunning, Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor of Cinema and Media Studies and Art History, received the Distinguished Career Achievement Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS). The Distinguished Career Achievement Award recognizes and celebrates the achievements of established scholars in Cinema and Media Studies.

“Of course, recognition by one’s peers is always the most gratifying form of recognition, so I value this award very much,” said Gunning. “Is this a hint that retirement is around the corner? The Department of Cinema and Media Studies has recently been given such wonderful support that it has become the sort of varied and powerful force in the academic field… I can't see myself bowing out of my profession at such an exciting time.”

The SCMS also honored Gunning’s colleague D.N. Rodowick, Glen A. Lloyd Distinguished Service Professor in Cinema and Media Studies, with the Katherine Singer Kovacs Book Award for his Elegy for Theory. This award is given to the outstanding book in the field of Cinema and Media Studies published in the previous year.

"I am deeply honored that the Society of Cinema and Media Studies has graced my book, Elegy for Theory, with this distinguished award,” said Rodowick. “I am grateful for this recognition by the field, and also feel that it honors my career-long commitment to examining the theory and philosophy of moving images, and the necessity for investigating questions and concepts for theory from a historical as well as philosophical perspective.”

Gunning and Rodowick will officially receive their awards March 27 at the 2015 SCMS Conference.
