Meet the Staff: Jamie McCormick

Jamie McCormick, Director of Summer Language Institute

More than 100 staff members work in the Division of the Humanities. We'll introduce you to our staff in this continuing series.

Jamie McCormick
Director of the Summer Language Institute, UChicago Language Center
Office: Cobb Hall, Suite 211

What do you like most about your job?
It’s very satisfying for me when I can coordinate with different offices across the university to help initiate programs that provide more opportunities or improved experiences for students on campus. Like working to develop the Summer Language Scholarship program for MA students in the Humanities to help make those classes more affordable for students in MAPH, CMES, and other programs.

What was the last good book you read?
Well right now I’m reading a book called Before the Storm by Hyde Parker Rick Perlstein. It’s about Barry Goldwater and the rise of the American conservative movement in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It’s been very interesting to learn about the roots of our current political moment.

You might work with me if...
...you have graduate students who want to take a language course over the summer, or who want to teach a language course.

What are you most looking forward to this spring?
There’s a sour cherry tree in the courtyard of the building where I live, and every spring I look forward to watching it flower. The tree is very pretty when it’s in full bloom, and I enjoy watching it set fruit and hoping for a big crop of cherries in July. Sour cherry pie from homegrown cherries is a treat I get to look forward to for months.
