Visit Student Health and Counseling Services for complete information on student health care services, immunization requirements, and student insurance plans. To review University policy regarding insurance and immunizations, please see the Student Manual.

Health insurance coverage for all registered students is mandatory. During the time you are registered at the University, you are required to enroll in either the Basic or Advantage Prescription plan or waive enrollment by providing evidence that you have coverage in a health insurance plan that is comparable to the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP). Unless you make a U-SHIP coverage selection or waive U-SHIP enrollment during the enrollment period, you will be automatically enrolled in U-SHIP Basic and the Office of the Bursar will bill you accordingly.

The enrollment period ends at 5:00pm on Friday of the fourth week of your first quarter of registration during the plan year. Students approved to register after the insurance enrollment deadline must submit an insurance enrollment/waiver application at registration time. Failure to do so will result in automatic enrollment into U-SHIP Basic. Every student must complete the enrollment or waiver process each year by visiting Student Health Enrollment.

University of Chicago fellowships which include student health insurance provide coverage on U-SHIP Basic unless otherwise specified. Students may elect U-SHIP Advantage Prescription coverage but will be responsible for the difference in cost. Students who elect other additional coverage (i.e., dependent, dental, vision) will be responsible for those costs. Students who choose to waive U-SHIP will not be reimbursed for the cost of coverage on other plans.
