|Description||This winter, join students and faculty from the Department of Cinema and Media Studies as we open classroom screenings to the public. This time, we’re highlighting two courses: Humanities Teaching Fellow Dave Burnham’s Veracity, Virtuality, Venue: Experiments in 21st Century Documentary and Department of Cinema and Media Studies Lecturer Marc Downie’s Performance Captured course. |
Avant-garde dance titan Merce Cunningham once said “the dancing does not refer, it is what it is. It’s that whole visual experience.” This mantra is reflected in Alla Kovgan’s 3D documentary, which blends archival footage with vibrant 3D recreations of some of the pioneering choreographer’s most famous works. Eschewing straightforward biography, the film tells Cunningham’s story through his creations, looking at the period between 1942 and 1972. Kovgan highlights some of Cunningham’s famous collaborators, including Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and his lifelong partner John Cage, while members of Cunningham’s last company stage several of his creations in unexpected settings. (Alla Kovgan, USA, 93 min., 3D DCP)
Marc Downie is a Scottish-born digital artist. His studio OpenEndedGroup combines non-photorealistic computational imagery, body movement recorded by motion-capture and other means, and the autonomy of artworks directed by artificial intelligence. He has presented work at Lincoln Center, MoMA, ICA Boston, Detroit Institute of Art, and the film festivals of Sundance, New York, Rome, Berlin, and many others.
