DescriptionIs it feasible for teachers of Arabic to integrate language and culture in online learning environments? What would that look like? Would students be able to experience the cultural component fully? And what should teachers expect to happen during class time? In this workshop, participants will learn how to design effective lesson plans that integrate the cultural components of a curriculum, without neglecting language exposure and production. Examples from Khallina and other sources will be shared and discussed, as well as weekly lesson plan samples that demonstrate how to design engaging classes and assign meaningful homework.

Laila Familiar is Senior Lecturer of Arabic at New York University in Abu Dhabi and academic consultant at American Councils for International Education. She has an M.A. in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language and a Ph.D. in Corpus Linguistics for the design of reading materials.
