|Description||Forbidden Love: The Passion of Héloïse and Abelard |
He lusted after her body, but was seduced by her mind.
The 12th century poet, philosopher and scholar Pierre Abélard fell passionately in love with his student, the brilliant and beautiful young Héloïse D’Argenteuil. Their affair was erotic, profoundly intellectual, and socially taboo. Forced to separate, the lovers communicated by letter for decades. Their frank and intimate correspondence provides us with a voyeuristic glimpse into one of history’s great love stories. Our actors share their writings, while we perform musical settings of poetry of courtly love from the 14th century, including music by Machaut, Codier, Senleches, and others.
