The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for your interest in the Division of the Humanities at the University of Chicago. I hope that your research in the different sections of our Web site will encourage you to consider applying to one of our doctoral or master's programs. A first step in this research should be the link to Departments and Committees; it will lead you to the Web sites of all of our degree-granting programs, where you may read about faculty, current graduate students, course offerings, and other news and events.

One thing that has historically distinguished the University of Chicago from other top research institutions is a particularly strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and collaboration. In exploring About the Division, you will find this emphasis reflected in our arts and cultural organizations, research projects, journals, and the many multi-discipline centers connected to the Humanities. Since the mid-1980s, one of the forms this culture of intellectual confluence has taken is the sixty-some Graduate Workshops in Humanities and Social Sciences, sponsored by the University's Council on Advanced Studies. These workshops bring together faculty and graduate students from diverse fields at the University and the wider Chicago area to discuss their work on topics of common interest. We encourage you to visit the graduate workshops' Web site. One of the dozens of workshops offered annually will surely match your research interests and offer the promise of conversations with our faculty and graduate students.

Please also spend some time in our Current Students pages. In them you will find links to all kinds of resources available to our students and descriptions of the ways we are working to enhance the personal and professional lives of our diverse graduate student population. Finally, to explore up-to-the-minute course listings (as well as archived listings going back many years), visit the University's Time Schedules.

I welcome your exploration of our division and hope you enjoy discovering what it may have to offer you. If you decide to apply to one or more of our programs, go to Admissions and Financial Aid to begin the application process. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Martina Munsters
Dean of Students
