Undergraduate Research Opportunities
|
Chicago
undergraduate students can gain valuable research experience in the
Phonology Lab, as volunteers or as Research Assistants for class
credit. Undergraduates working in the Lab are involved in all aspects
of our research; in particular, most RAs help us design, run, and
analyze our various experiments exploring the phonological system of
human language. Specific topics include phenomena such as the effect of
speaking rate on tonal production, the effect of tone on duration
perception, and the interaction of stress and segmental quantity. For
more information on the precise nature of these projects, please see
the brief descriptions and papers listed via the links above. Following
a brief training in the methods and procedures we use to test our
hypotheses, students immediately become involved in the actual analysis
of phonetic and phonology data, testing of subjects, as well as in the
planning of experiments, the construction of experimental stimuli, and
the day-to-day running of the Lab. In addition to participating in
several ongoing projects, RAs will be encouraged to develop their own
projects. As such, these positions are ideal for students considering
honors theses on such topics, or students looking for research
experience in general. Students also join in weekly lab meetings in
which we discuss the theoretical motivation for current experiments,
results of recently completed experiments, possible next directions,
relevant research findings from other labs, and so on. As an
undergraduate in the Lab, you will acquire both a practical
understanding of experimental techniques and principles that can be
obtained only through hands-on research experience, and an appreciation
of the theoretical issues addressed by our research. If this interests
you, contact Prof. Yu (aclyu (AT) uchicago.edu) to set up a meeting to
talk about our research opportunities.

The research takes place at the University of Chicago in the Social Science Research Building.
The Social Science research Building is located at the southeast corner
of the main quad on campus. If you are interested in participating in
our studies please email us at aclyu (AT) uchicago.edu.
