This project will help to alleviate the paucity of pedagogical materials related to
the instruction of the Macedonian language. Based on Milcho Manchevski's outstanding
film "Before the Rain", a workbook and CD will be developed. The workbook, which
can be used in the classroom or independently, will provide beginning learners with a
tool that will enhance the acquisition of listening and speaking skills, as well
as reinforce grammar. Moreover, it will provide the Slavic Linguistics graduate
student with an overview of another Slavic language in a Pan Slavic and Balkan context. This
second target audience will be able to work independently. Upon completion of the
workbook, both the language learner and the graduate student will have completed
a full screening of the film. The CD, to be created in the second phase of the project,
will employ video clips to provide learners at various levels with interactive language
exercises. It will also include homework assignments and supplemental cultural
information. The CD lessons will be correlated with the workbook lessons. Video clips
will include clips from the film (pending copyright release) and interviews with
members of the Macedonian intelligentsia, who will evaluate the film. Work-in-progress
for this year includes the workbook and the interview taping.
