HARRY MATHEWS
Journey to Six Lands
The Autumn 2001 issue included poems by Lisa Jarnot, Christine Hume, and Devin Johnston, interviews with Thalia Field and Frank Bidart, essays on two recent anthologies of Twentieth Century British poetry and on filmmaker Peter Hutton, and fiction by Fanny Howe and Harry Mathews.
Mathews had read “Journey to Six Lands” at the University of IllinoisChicago in March 2001, and although a limited edition livre d’artiste with 9 lithographs by Hugh Weiss had been published in Lyon by URDLA in 2000, we were able to convince him to let CR publish it again.
In the early 1960s Mathews coedited Locus Solus (with John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler). He is the author, most recently of My Life in CIA: A Chronicle of 1973 (Dalkey), and coedited The OuLiPo Compendium (Make Now, 2006; 2nd edition).
