18:3-4 Spring-Summer 1966
JAMES WRIGHT
To the Poets in New York
James Wright published “To the Poets in New York” in the Spring-Summer 1966 issue. Chiefly associated with Robert Bly and the Deep Image group, Wright often used natural images to provoke connections in the unconscious; frequently, his tone was somber, even despairing. Wright had taken a teaching post at Hunter College in New York in 1966. A revised version of this poem was collected in Shall We Gather at the River (1968) and in his Collected Poems (1971).
