Goethe-Institut, Chicago, Illinois
LOCATION & DIRECTIONS
The Goethe-Institut itself is located at 150 N. Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago, Illinois.
FOR THOSE OF YOU COMING BY CAR:
Finding parking near the Goethe-Institut is possible, but expensive. There are parking lots and metered parking spots east and west of Michigan Avenue in the area around the Goethe-Institut. If you're coming from 90/94 or Lake Shore Drive, look for parking once you get close to the Goethe-Institut. (The Goethe-Institut is about 2 miles from either exit.) It's easiest if you stay on the north side of the river. The instructions below will take you right to the door of the Goethe-Institut, but be aware that you can't park there.
If you are taking 90/94 into Chicago: exit at Ohio Street heading east. Take Ohio Street to Michigan Avenue, then Michigan south to the Goethe-Institut (3 blocks).
If you are taking Lake Shore Drive into Chicago: exit at Illinois Street/Grand Avenue. Follow the exit ramp around to Grand Avenue, then head west. The tricky part is that Grand will bring you to "lower" Michigan Avenue. The Goethe-Institut is on "upper" Michigan. The Goethe-Institut is 2 blocks from Grand and Michigan. You can look for parking along Grand, then walk up the stairs at Michigan and south to the Goethe-Institut. To get to "upper"
Michigan by car, do the following: after exiting Lake Shore Drive, take Grand west to St. Clair Street, St. Clair north to Ontario Street, Ontario west to Michigan, Michigan south to the Goethe-Institut.
FOR THOSE OF YOU COMING BY PLANE:
From both O'Hare Airport and Midway Airport, you can take a cab or public transportation. Both airports are served by Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train lines which will get you downtown quickly and in an umweltfreundlich manner. Please note that if you plan to take public all the way to the Goethe-Institut, you will have to buy a "transfer" ticket at the airport ($1.80). For other modes of transport, such as private shuttles, inquire at the airport.
From O'Hare Airport, a cab to the Goethe-Institut costs about $35. Or take the CTA "blue" line train downtown to the Clark/Lake stop. This will leave you at Clark and Lake Streets (about half a mile south of the Goethe-Institut). From there walk 4 blocks east to Michigan and 3 blocks north to the Goethe-Institut.
From Midway Airport, a cab to the Goethe-Institut costs about $30. Or take the CTA "orange" line train downtown to the State/Lake stop. This will leave you at State and Lake Streets (about half a mile south of the Goethe-Institut). From there walk 2 blocks east to Michigan and 3 blocks north to the Goethe-Institut. Or you can take the
151 Sheridan bus from State and Lake heading north. Get off at Hubbard and State Streets and walk 3 blocks east to lower Michigan, then up the stairs to the Goethe-Institut.
FOR THOSE OF YOU COMING BY TRAIN:
From Union Station, a cab to the Goethe-Institut costs about $5. On weekdays, you can take the #157 Streeterville bus from Union Station directly to the Goethe-Institut ($1.50). The bus stops on the east side of Union Station, on Canal Street. Take the bus heading north down Canal.
On weekends, you can take the #151 Sheridan bus from Union Station. The bus stops on the east side of Union Station, on Canal Street. Take the bus heading south down Canal. Get off at Hubbard and State Streets and walk 3 blocks east to lower Michigan, then up the stairs to the Goethe-Institut.
FROM HYDE PARK:
Hyde Park is the south-side neighborhood in which the University of Chicago campus is located. Those of you who do not make other arrangements will most likely be housed somewhere in Hyde Park. Just ask your hosts how to get to the nearest busstop for the #6 "Jeffery Express" bus, which runs from Hyde Park to downtown until about 10:00 PM on weekdays and 6:30 PM on weekends. Going downtown, get off at South Water Street. From there, walk 2 blocks north along Michigan Avenue to the Goethe-Institut.
After hours, an alternative to the Jeffery is the Metra train line ($1.95), which runs between Hyde Park and downtown. Going downtown, get off at Randolph Street (the last stop). From there, walk 4 blocks north along Michigan Avenue to the Goethe-Institut. The last train back to Hyde Park leaves from Randolph and Michigan at 12:50 AM.
If you need more information about CTA and Metra routes, you can call (312) 836-7000.
