The Sanctuary of Melikertes-Palaimon: Phases from the mid 1st to mid 3rd century AD

Phase I - ca. 50 A.D.

Sacrificial Pit A surrounded by a low wall was opened ca. AD 50. To the west of it, an abandoned reservoir formerly serving the stadium came to be identified as the adyton of Palaimon.

Phase IIa - ca. 80 / 90 A.D.

Pit B was opened in ca. 80/90 to replace Pit A and the precinct expanded. A ramp gave access to the area in front of the reservoir (adyton of Palaimon).

Phase IIb - ca. 80 / 90 A.D.

Pit B was opened in ca. 80/90 to replace Pit A and the precinct expanded. A ramp gave access to the area in front of the reservoir (adyton of Palaimon).

Phase III - ca. 120 / 150 A.D.

The first Temple of Palaimon was built at the east side of Poseidon's temenos in ca. 120/138. Shortly afterwards Pit C was opened and the south precinct was established. Building A separates Pit C from the ceremonial area near the reservoir (adyton of Palaimon).

Phase V - ca. 161 / 180 A.D.

With the expansion of the main temenos in ca. 160/180 the Temple of Palaimon was moved to the south precinct and was linked by a subterranean passage to the reservoir (adyton of Palaimon). Building B was built at the south side of the enclosure and continued southward under the modern road.
