"The Franke Institute is a site for invention in Humanities, an interdisciplinary crossroads for people, ideas, and disciplines to mix. Managing interdisciplinarity is an oxymoron, but we provide possible pathways (like the 'Big Problems' curriculum in the College). I'm at home in interdisciplinary Humanities - an MA from Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities, my Ph.D. is in the History of Human Sciences. I've taught in the Humanities Common Core as a Harper Instructor, and teach courses now on 'Codes, Cultures and Media,' and 'Human Intelligences: Animal to AI.'" |

Mai is the Assistant Director for both the Center for Disciplinary Innovation and the Franke Institute for the Humanities. She manages programming, courses, and visitors for the Center for Disciplinary Innovation while overseeing the internal programs, collaborations with partner organizations, and Institute publications for the Franke. Mai received her M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago in 2002 and her B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Culture from Scripps College in 2001. She has worked at the Institute since 2002. In her spare time, she studies guitar, plays in a women's rock ensemble, and continues to explore Chicago. |

Rachel is the Institute's web and graphic designer. She began her career in design almost 10 years ago at ABN AMRO after graduating from Oberlin College with a B.A. in English. A Chicago native, her hobbies include drawing, dance, and taking classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

| Bertie manages the regularly occurring programs at the Franke Institute as well as lectures and events. He is a Ph.D. candidate in the ethnomusicology program at the University of Chicago's Music Department. His thesis examines three case studies involving religion, pilgrimage, and music in Bangladesh. Bertie plays the North Indian tabla drum and the Bengali dotara lute. |
