Workshop on Sound Change Actuation:

Please note that the Workshop on Sound Change Actuation will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18, 2013 as a satellite event of the Chicago Linguistics Society. Registration for the workshop will be FREE until April 1, 2013. We encourage interested CLS participants to attend this event. More information and the workshop's program can be found here.

Call for Papers:

The Chicago Linguistic Society invites abstracts for talks in any area of current research in phonetics, phonology, morpholgy, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, as well as in related cross-disciplinary areas. In addition, CLS 49 will include the following topic-oriented sessions: 1) Morphology-Semantics Interface, 2) Slavic Linguistics and 3) Cross-Linguistic Approaches to the Syntax-Phonology Interface. Presenters will be given 20 minutes for presentation followed by a 10-minutes question period. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per author. Presented papers will be published in the CLS proceedings.


Parasession Descriptions:

1) Morphology-Semantics Interface

Invited speaker: Daniel Harbour, Queen Mary University of London

We invite papers that deal with the morpho-semantic interface and the application of semantic principles below the level of the word. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) questions of differences in the behavior of morphemic and sentential constituents, morpho-semantic interactions from a typological perspective, phi-theory, compositionality at the morphemic level, and questions of markedness and underspecification in the interface.

2) Slavic Linguistics

Invited speaker: Roumyana Pancheva, University of Southern California

We invite papers for a paresession investigating questions on a variety of topics in Slavic linguistics. Analyses of any linguistic phenomena encountered in a member of the Slavic language family are welcome. We encourage contributions from formal approaches in all linguistic subfields.

3) Cross-Linguistic Approaches to the Syntax-Phonology Interface

Invited speaker: Lisa Selkirk, University of Massachusetts at Amherst

We invite abstracts from all theoretical and experimental frameworks which demonstrate ways in which domains of phonological processes interact with syntactic structure. We especially welcome work on under-studied languages. Some specific questions include: What kinds of phonological processes provide evidence of the interaction of syntax and phonology and how do they vary cross-linguistically? How can experimental approaches to sentence processing explore relationships between syntax and phonology? It is our hope that papers given in this parasession will help promote a broader understanding of topics such as focus and information structure, an area of the grammar in which researchers of the syntax-phonology interface have a great deal to contribute.


Abstract Guidelines:

Abstracts which fail to adhere to any of the following guidelines will be rejected without consideration for inclusion in the conference program.

1) Abstracts must be submitted in PDF format with filename PaperTitle.pdf (e.g., The_Morphophonemics_of_Robojibwe.pdf).

2) Include paper title and keywords (i.e., CLS session title, linguistic subfield(s), language(s)/ language family) in the abstract.

3) An abstract must be at most two pages in length (including data and references), on letter sized (8.5 by 11) or A4 page setting with one-inch margins, set in a font no smaller than 11 points. Intersperse data within the main text of the abstract. Do not put data on a separate page.

4) Abstracts must be anonymous. Author name(s) must not appear on the abstract or file name. In addition, be sure to remove any author name in the document properties of the PDF file.

6) All abstracts must be submitted by 11:59 PM CST on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.

Abstracts will be evaluated under a two-tiered review system involving both external and internal reviewers.

CLS 49 (April 18-20, 2013)

Welcome to the new website of the Chicago Linguistic Society. CLS is the oldest student-run linguistics society in the US. Our mission is to organize student activities in the Department of Linguistics - including a weekly tea and occasional LingLunches - and to hold an annual conference in early Spring where linguists and scholars working in related disciplines can present and discuss their work. The conference has produced a volume of proceedings for each year of its existence, and our volumes can be found in libraries and bibliographies around the world. Our conference proceedings are also now becoming available on-line.

All CLS officers are volunteers from the department who are usually second or third year graduate students. We receive funding from the University and the Department, from the Graduate Student Council, and from the sales of our conference proceedings and memorabilia.
