The Chicago Linguistic Society

General guidelines for the presentation and publication of papers for the Annual Meetings of the Chicago Linguistic Society

Initial submission and the selection process for presentations:
Scholars from all disciplines within and related to the field of linguistics are invited (via a general call for papers) to submit a one-page proposal (abstract) of their paper to the Chicago Linguistic Society's peer review committees. Committees are comprised of the CLS Officers and other advanced graduate students in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago, and are formed according to the various sub-fields within linguistics (syntax, pragmatics, morphology, etc.) and according to the special topics addressed by the parasessions. Each committee (which is comprised of at least 6 individuals specializing in that area) reviews and ranks the submitted abstracts along the following guidelines:

All reviewing done by the committees is 'blind': the submitters' identities are withheld from the committees until after the review process is over and the presenters are chosen.

Due to the number of submissions received, and in keeping with the high standards of the Annual Meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society, only the top 15% of abstracts ranked by the committees are selected for individual presentation.

Publication in the Proceedings of the Annual Meetings of the Chicago Linguistic Society:
All works presented at the Annual Meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society will be considered for publication in the CLS Proceedings (papers for which abstracts were accepted through the review process, but were not presented at the conference, will not be considered). The Officers of the Chicago Linguistic Society (also the editors of the proceedings) then review the papers submitted, and deem which are of publishable quality. Generally, the selection process follows that of the abstract selection, and only the papers that conform to the highest standards of quality are published. Submissions to the volume must conform to the CLS stylesheet, provided as a template for MS Word, and must not exceed 15 pages. If you wish to use TeX or any other word processing software, you must also follow the same template as best you can.

Overview/distribution of CLS's proceedings:
The Chicago Linguistic Society is a non-profit society for the advancement of research in linguistics, and through its annual meetings, provides a forum where scholars can present and discuss their work with the larger linguistic community. Additionally, the Society serves as a publisher (which is separate and distinct from the University of Chicago) for the proceedings of the annual meetings and for other select linguistic works. The proceedings of the annual meetings provide a select compilation of presentations that have the opportunity, in print format, to reach a larger audience. Distribution of the proceedings is international, and done both through the Society's offices and through other international distributors such as EBSCO and Amazon.
