La riconoscenza / Il vero omaggio
Critical Edition by

FONDAZIONE ROSSINI 2003
La riconoscenza, composed in 1821 in honor of Maria Luisa, duchess of Lucca, was modified by Rossini the following year to become Il vero omaggio, a cantata presented at the Congress of Verona in honor of the Austrian emperor Francis I and the Holy Alliance. Later revisions transformed La riconoscenza into a cantata in memory of Antonio Canova, a wedding cantata, and a celebration of a papal legate. Both La riconoscenza and Il vero omaggio are presented complete in this volume, along with the material necessary to perform the the Canova cantata. The later versions probably did not have Rossini's direct involvement and are discussed in the Appendix.
This edition has undertaken to reconstruct several numbers of Il vero omaggio for which no musical sources directly connected with the cantata exist.
