Under an agreement of February 1981, the University of Chicago and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) established at the University of Chicago a text database called AMERICAN AND FRENCH RESEARCH ON THE TREASURY OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE (ARTFL). ARTFL contains in machine-readable form a corpus of French texts which originally had been developed by the CNRS. ARTFL's purpose is to provide scholars throughout the United States and Canada with ready access to the French texts through a computer and a software system for analysis and research.
The subscribing institution desires to have access to ARTFL for its students, faculty, and other affiliated scholars. The University of Chicago is pleased to make ARTFL available to the subscribing institution, which agrees to observe the following conditions:
1. Students, faculty, and other persons certified by the subscribing institution as being connected academically with the institution may have access to ARTFL during the year.
2. Members may not copy the ARTFL Database or the software used in connection with it without the express written permission of the University of Chicago, given by the Director of the ARTFL Project.
3. The ARTFL Project will use its best efforts to provide satisfactory access and services to each subscribing institution and individual user. However, neither the University of Chicago nor the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique will be liable for errors or defects in ARTFL or for damages resulting from the service or results provided by the ARTFL Project or the University of Chicago.
