A number of University of Chicago alumni have contributed to Jack Cheng and Marian H. Feldman eds. Ancient Near Eastern Art in Context: Studies in Honor of Irene J. Winter by Her Students (Leiden: Brill) 2007, including Stephanie Reed (PhD candidate), Claudia Suter (former coordinator of the Diyala Project) and Benjamin Studevent-Hickman (currently a Research Associate).
We are grateful for a chance to express our respect and admiration for our teacher, Irene J. Winter who earned her M.A. at the University of Chicago for her thesis "The Carmona Ivories and Phoenician Expansion in the Western Mediterranean."

Lecturer - Uzbek
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago announces the position of Lecturer in Uzbek for the academic year 2008-09. This is a full-time, one-year, non-renewable position; classes begin September 29, 2008. The Lecturer will teach both first- and second-year Modern Uzbek, one class of each for three quarters (a total of six courses); classes will be small but are vital to our program and may include both undergraduate and graduate students. The emphasis in all courses will be on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. An advanced degree in Turcology, Turkic languages and literatures, or second language teaching and acquisition is preferred. Strong, recent teaching experience and evaluations and proficiency in Uzbek are essential. Lecturer - Persian
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago announces the position of Lecturer in Persian (part-time) for the academic year 2008-09 (September 29, 2008 – June 13, 2009). This position is not benefits-eligible. The successful candidate will teach one class each quarter of either the Elementary or Intermediate level of modern standard Persian (of Tehran), a total of three courses, to both undergraduate and graduate students , with an equal emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking. Native or near-native proficiency is required. Experience teaching Persian is highly desired; preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Persian language, literature or a related field.
Note that this position will depend upon sufficient class enrollment.

Teaching Assistant - ArabicThe Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago announces an opening for Teaching Assistants for Arabic (various levels) for the 2008-2009 academic year (NOTE: You must be available all three quarters). Re-posted (again). TAs work in consultation with the instructor of record for the class and under his or her supervision, devoting approximately 10 hours per week to the position. The TA instructs the class for a single session per week (50 – 80 minutes), as well as grading homework and providing assistance and/or conversation time to students outside of class (precise assignment decided with the instructor). The instructor is encouraged to visit the TA’s class once during the year and to provide feedback. Additionally, TAs may be asked to attend a brief orientation session during registration week for the fall quarter. ************BA Preceptor
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago announces that applications are now being accepted for BA Preceptor for the 2008-2009 academic year. This position is now for the academic year! The preceptor runs the required autumn quarter seminar (NEHC 29800) for all fourth-year NELC concentrators (approximately 32 this year). It is a workshop course designed to survey the fields represented by NELC and to assist students in beginning the research and writing of their BA papers. (Specific content of the papers is overseen by the faculty adviser.) In addition, the Preceptor will meet with students individually and/or in small groups throughout winter quarter as they research and write. During the first three weeks of spring quarter, the Preceptor will be available as the papers are finalized. Applicants must be ABD and must have very strong research and writing skills.
