Registration Information

MAPH students must turn in registration materials to the MAPH office. We will accept registration materials beginning Monday, September 22 at 8:00 a.m. The deadline for MAPH registration is Thursday, September 25 at 4:15 p.m. There is a $100 late registration fee.

Registration Form

  • Check over the preprinted information (UCID, name, residency status) to make sure it is correct. If the preprinted information is incorrect, cross out the incorrect information and print the correct information next to it. If you plan to register for fewer than three courses, you must get permission from me.
  • If you are registering for a course requiring Consent of Instructor, you must PRINT the instructor’s name in the “Notes” section and have the instructor sign her/his name on the ‘Instructor Approval’ line. An email from the instructor sent to you EXPLICITLY indicating consent to take a course may be attached to your registration card in lieu of a signature.
  • The ‘Subject’ field requires a canonical four-letter department indicator. Examples: ENGL, CMST, MAPH.
  • The ‘Course’ field requires a 5-digit number from the time schedules. Please double-check to make sure you enter the number correctly. Mistakes cause delays.
  • The ‘Section’ number requires a 2-digit number from the time schedules. [This is where you indicate your preceptor’s section number for MAPH Core (Foundations of Interpretive Theory).]
  • ‘Units’ - All courses are 100 units.
  • ‘Audit’ - Do NOT mark this box. If you are thinking of auditing a class, come talk to me.
  • ‘Dept Approval’ - You must get a signature of approval from your faculty advisor or your preceptor.

Restrictions

Go to cMore and log yourself in to make sure you have no restrictions on your account. You need your cnet id in order to do this. Your cnet id is your username and password for your University of Chicago email - everyone should already have set up U of C email. If you haven’t claimed your cnet id, go to the cNetID Homepage and get it now. Restrictions must be cleared before you can register.

Core Course

You must register for MAPH 30100 (or ENGL 34100 - it’s the same course). Register by preceptor section (01–10). Full-time students must register for two other courses. If you want to check out two different classes before deciding which one to actually take, register for one of them but attend the first meetings of both. You can adjust your registration during add-drop period.

Full Courses

The earlier you are able to turn in your form, the less likely it is your selected courses will be filled. Do not rely on the registration numbers that show up on the time schedules - they are not updated in real time. Have a couple of alternative courses already chosen. Feel free to attach a small note with alternate classes to your registration card. If your course is filled when we present your materials for processing and you have not indicated alternates, we will send you email right away so that you can select an alternate class. You can still attend your first-choice class and ask the instructor for permission to register. There’s also a good chance that a full class will open up again because some students will drop it. U of C has a three-week add-drop period.

Upper Level Seminars

Be aware that courses numbered 50000 or above are advanced graduate courses, normally not open to first year graduate students even if they are not flagged with “consent required”. MAPH students must have consent of instructor to register for these courses. (NOTE: In the Art History Department, courses number 40000 and above are graduate seminars and require permission for MAPH students.) We strongly discourage taking these seminar courses, especially in fall quarter, because of the workload and level of preparation required and the lightning speed of the quarter system.

Undergrad-Only Courses

MAPH students may not typically take 10000-level courses except for language courses. Talk with me if you think a 10000-level course is suitable for you. MAPH students may take 20000-level courses with consent of the instructor. The instructor must understand that the student is taking the course for graduate credit. Most instructors who give such consent assign more reading and longer papers to graduate students in these courses.

Register from the on-line time schedule (not from departmental websites).
