Project, University of Chicago, November, 1994. Images are 80 percent
scale, 300 dpi, 256 greyscale, with adjustments to brightness and contrast
to increase legibility (Epson scanner, brightness = 2, contrast = 9,
mid-range greys darkened).
Notes: This is an experiment to determine the optimal parameters
for transmitting page images on the network. The GIF files range from
46KB to 61KB. All html pages with links were generated automatically.
Half of the images were coverted from TIFF to GIF formats automatically.
We can assume that the proceedures to scan and organize large bodies
of digital page images can be almost completely automatic.
