Fellowships for Graduate Students

Beginning with the fifth academic year, coursework should be completed, students move into Advanced Residence, and tuition drops significantly. Depending on the particular program, students may be eligible to apply for one of NELC’s endowed scholarships:

    • Harold A. Rantz Scholarship Fund

There are some opportunities for advanced graduate students to work as Teaching Assistants or Student Lecturers in introductory and intermediate courses in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish, as well as in Islamic and Near Eastern civilization courses. In addition, some teaching opportunities exist in certain adult education courses and in nearby colleges.

Advanced students may also apply for the following University of Chicago Fellowships, as appropriate:

    • Franke Institute Dissertation-Year Fellowships
    • William Rainey Harper Dissertation-Year Fellowships
    • Mellon Dissertation-Year Fellowships
    • Whiting Dissertation-Year Fellowships

    • Special Overseas Dissertation Research Fellowships
