Dissertation

“Domain of Pharaoh: The Structure and Components of the Economy of Old Kingdom Egypt”

The dissertation analyzes the institutions, as well as associated social and administrative aspects, pertaining to the economy of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. The focus on the Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom periods (ca. 3100-2200 B.C.) reveals a hitherto overlooked administrative structure quite distinct from the one prevalent in eras subsequent to ca. 2200 B.C. The preeminent role played by the cult of the living king appears to have governed most economic matters, which was administered by the centralizing apparatus of the palace.
