Announcements:
A number of University of Chicago alumni have contributed to Jack Cheng and Marian H. Feldman eds. Ancient Near Eastern Art in Context: Studies in Honor of Irene J. Winter by Her Students (Leiden: Brill) 2007, including Stephanie Reed (PhD candidate), Claudia Suter (former coordinator of the Diyala Project) and Benjamin Studevent-Hickman (currently a Research Associate).
We are grateful for a chance to express our respect and admiration for our teacher, Irene J. Winter who earned her M.A. at the University of Chicago for her thesis "The Carmona Ivories and Phoenician Expansion in the Western Mediterranean."

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago announces openings for Arabic Teaching Assistants (various levels) for the 2008-09 academic year (NOTE: You must be available all three quarters). These positions are being reposted. TAs work in consultation with the instructor of record for the class and under his or her supervision, devoting approximately 10 hours per week to the position. The TA instructs the class for a single session per week (50 – 80 minutes), as well as grading homework and providing assistance and/or conversation time to students outside of class (precise assignment decided with the instructor). The instructor is encouraged to visit the TA’s class once during the year and to provide feedback. Additionally, TAs may be asked to attend a brief orientation session during registration week for the fall quarter. Application forms are available in the NELC office. Ccompleted applications should be submitted no later than Monday, May 19, 2008 to:
