MAPH is the undertaking of the entire Humanities Division at the University of Chicago and exists in order to open the resources of the Division and the larger University to entering graduate students making important transitions. Each year MAPH brings together a class of about 100 students, some preparing for doctoral work in specific academic disciplines in the Humanities or the humanistic Social Sciences, some exploring the possibility of doctoral work, and some making career changes or seeking to complete work on creative projects in the context of a year of rigorous academic study.

Each year MAPH brings together a class of about 100 students…remarkable for their diversity of interests and experience, for their wit, intellectual strength, and promise

Most are recent college graduates, but some are professionals at mid- or late-career. Because of the depth and breadth of the applicant pool, MAPH can and does restrict offers of admission to students remarkable for their diversity of interests and experience, for their wit, intellectual strength, and promise. Each year, a powerful community forms in the Program. Although MAPH students work harder and face greater demands than any other group of entry-level graduate students in the Humanities Division, they are happier and more content than their fellows. It is the sense of community that MAPH alumni miss most.
