Workshops
The Department of Linguistics at Chicago provides a fertile environment for intellectual
growth outside the classroom. Our students and faculty regularly organize
year-long workshops. This year, we are running one workshop funded by the
Graduate Workshops in the Humanities and Social Sciences:
- Fieldwork Methodologies and Frameworks
coordinated by Megan Clark and Erin Debenport.
Previous
workshops have included syntax, speech, language
development, and language in society.
Publications
The department publishes a scholarly journal
called Contemporary
Linguistics. The student-run Chicago Linguistic Society
publishes a volume of papers from its annual conference each year.
Department Life
We also recognize the need to get to know one's
peers, faculty, or students in a more relaxed atmosphere. Many of us host
social events at their homes. In the Department itself, CLS hosts our Thursday
afternoon teas, which are held during class weeks. Typically no tea is
served on these occasions. We sample dishes from different parts of world
and drink beer and wine, aside from non-alcoholic beverages.
We have had some especially
cute department members.
Our kick-off tea in October of 2003: a
few photos.
In 1999 we lost a beloved member of our
department, Jim McCawley. We (and the world of linguistics) share stories,
jokes, and marvel at his greatness on a page
dedicated to his memory.
