The Department of Germanic Studies sponsors three programs abroad.
If you have any questions, please contact Catherine Baumann, Director of the German Department's Language Program, or Lewis Fortner, Associate Dean of Students in the College.
- Western Civilization in Vienna
Students in Chicago's autumn-quarter Vienna Program study the history of Central Europe in one of its chief capitals, a city of extraordinary beauty and cultural richness. The three-course " Vienna in Western Civilization" sequence is compressed into the ten weeks of autumn quarter and taught in English. Students may complete their Western Civilization sequence while beginning (or continuing) the study of German language. For the academic year 2008/09, the application deadline will be in early February 2008. - Intensive Language in Freiburg
The autumn-quarter Freiburg Program offers students in the College an opportunity to study German language at the intermediate (second-year) level in a completely German-speaking environment. The Program is fashioned upon the language "immersion" principle in which students receive daily German language instruction, reside with a local family, and observe a strict no-English rule. Freiburg itself, a modest and charming medieval city nestled in the Black Forest, home to a major German University, is a key attraction of the Program. For the academic year 2008/09, the application deadline will be in mid-February 2008.
- University-based Program in Berlin
The University of Chicago Berlin Program provides students in the College with an opportunity to study for an academic year in the exciting capital of a reunited Germany. The Program is operated by the Berlin Consortium for German Studies (BCGS), an association of six American universities (comprised of Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania, and Princeton). It is based at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, a pre-eminent German university located in Dahlem, a villa district in southwest Berlin. Program participants also have access to courses at other major Berlin institutions including Humboldt University and the Technical University. Chicago students are expected to participate in the Berlin Program for the full academic year. For the academic year 2008/09, the application deadline will be in late January 2008.
Other study abroad resources for University of Chicago college students include:
- Foreign Language Acquisition Grant (FLAG)
The Foreign Language Acquisition Grant (FLAG) Program offers up to one hundred awards ($2,000 each) to College students to defray the costs of intermediate or advanced language study abroad. Study programs must be at least eight weeks in duration and located in a setting where the target language is predominantly spoken. Applicants must have completed or tested out of the 103 level of the target language by the program start date. The deadline for applications is February 20, 2007. - Fulbright Program for U.S. Students
The Fulbright Program is the largest international exchange program in the U.S. Graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students are eligible to apply. Interested students are asked to contact David Comp, Fulbright Program Adviser for Undergraduate Students or Tamara Felden, Fulbright Program Adviser for Graduate Students. The application cycle for the 2008-2009 Fulbright U.S. Student competition opens on May 1, 2007.
