General Information
Visit studenthealth.uchicago.edu for complete information on student health care services, immunization requirements, and student insurance plans. To review University policy regarding insurance and immunizations, please see the Student Manual. SASI refers to Student Accident and Sickness Insurance.
Health insurance coverage for all registered students is mandatory. (Note: The only exception applicable to Humanities is for doctoral students in Extended Residence who are not eligible to enroll in SASI.) During the time you are registered at the University, you are required to enroll in either the Basic or Advantage SASI plan or waive enrollment by providing evidence that you have coverage in a health insurance plan that is comparable to the University's SASI plan. Unless you make a SASI coverage selection or waive SASI enrollment during the enrollment period, you will be automatically enrolled in the SASI Basic plan and the Office of the Bursar will bill you accordingly.
The enrollment period ends at 5:00pm on Friday of the second week of your first quarter of registration during the plan year. Students approved to register as a student after the insurance enrollment deadline must submit an insurance enrollment/waiver application at registration time. Failure to do so will result in automatic enrollment into the SASI Basic plan. Every student must complete the enrollment or waiver process each year.
University Fellowships with Insurance Coverage
University of Chicago fellowships which include student health insurance provide coverage on the University's Basic Plan unless otherwise specified. Students who wish to take coverage on the Advantage Plan may elect to do so but will be responsible for the difference in cost. Students who elect any additional coverage (i.e. dependent coverage, dental coverage) will be responsible for those costs as well. Students who choose to waive SASI will not be reimbursed for the cost of coverage on other plans.
Each year all students are required to complete the University student insurance enrollment/waiver process by visiting sasi.uchicago.edu. The on-line form for an upcoming academic year typically becomes available in July. Students who wish to take University student insurance are encouraged to complete the on-line form rather than waiting to default into the Basic plan. Information about SASI is available at studenthealth.uchicago.edu.
Graduate Aid Initiative
Per the University's Graduate Aid Initiative, all current Ph.D. students who matriculated since Autumn Quarter 2003 will receive financial aid to cover the cost of University health insurance for three quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring) for the balance of their first five years in the degree program. This offer applies only to students who elect coverage on the University's student health insurance plan. Students will not be reimbursed for the cost of coverage on other plans. This aid will cover the cost of insurance on the Basic Plan, provided a student elects to take it.& Students who wish to take coverage on the Advantage Plan may elect to do so but will be responsible for the difference in cost. Students who elect any additional coverage (i.e. dependent coverage, dental coverage) will be responsible for those costs as well.
