Pass/Fail, Audits, and Language Exams

Pass/Fail
Pass/Fail is not a registration status. Rather, students arrange a pass/fail grade with their instructors at the beginning of a course. Students should check with their departments about program stipulations regarding courses taken pass/fail.

Audit
To audit a course (courses taken for a grade of "R"), a student should check the audit column next to the appropriate course number on the registration form. Changes to and from audit status may be made using an add/drop form during the add/drop period. To change from enrollment for a grade to audit status after the add/drop period, the course instructor may submit an "R" as the grade on the course grade sheet. A change from audit status to enrollment for a grade (dropping the "R") after the add/drop period ends requires consent of instructor and carries a $50 late change fee ($150 for a prior quarter). MA and MFA students are not eligible to take courses for a grade of "R".

Language Exams
Students must register to take a University graduate foreign language reading examination. The codes for these exams are listed in the Time Schedules under "Language Reading Exam." The exam fee is $70. An additional $30 is assessed for each language reading exam added after Friday of third week. A late change fee ($50 for the current quarter and $150 for a prior quarter) is assessed for any enrollment change processed after the add/drop period has ended. No refund of the exam fee is issued for exams dropped after Friday of third week. Students are notified of exam results through department administrators. Results are also posted in cMore with other current quarter grades. Only grades of Pass (P) or High Pass (P*) become part of a student's permanent transcript. The Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students in the University administers the language examinations, describes the format of the examinations, and includes a list of previous exams that can be useful for timed practice.
