External Fellowships

Many beginning students come to their M.A. or Ph.D. programs with University funding for tuition and living expenses. Others have received funding from external fellowship programs, such as the Beinecke, Ford, or Soros.

Two major federal fellowships with substantial stipends that are renewable for multiple years are the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship (to be applied for before or during the first year of doctoral study) and the National Science Foundation Fellowship. U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible (typically for first- or second-year students in linguistics, history or philosophy of science, and archaeology). Deadlines for both fellowships are in early autumn quarter.

Please call or e-mail the Assistant Dean of Students for Admissions and Fellowships for more information and assistance.
