General Information on Dissertation Research

Research travel grants for in-residence doctoral students are available through divisional and University-wide competitions. Students are notified of divisional competitions by email throughout the academic year. Actual competition deadlines are posted on the student calendar. Students should also consult with their departments, which may have their own resources, and the Office of Graduate Affairs, which sponsors the Doolittle-Harrison Fellowship.

For information on other research funding, short-term and long-term, you may consult the searchable Grant/Fellowship Blog, managed by the Dean of Students Office, and/or make an appointment to talk with the Assistant Dean of Students for Admissions and Fellowships.

Several federal and private agencies offer grants to support predissertation and dissertation research, on campus, outside Chicago, and abroad. Examples are the Mellon/Council on Library and Information Resources Fellowship for Dissertation Research in Original Sources, Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program, the National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant, and Social Sciences Research Council's International Dissertation Research Fellowships. Some of these programs require that awardees have been admitted to candidacy or have citizenship requirements.
