Career Advising and Planning Services

Career Advising and Planning Services provides the counseling, preparation, and connections needed by graduate students and alumni to pursue academic and nonacademic careers. All the assistant directors for graduate services have MA or PhD degrees and direct experience in academic and nonacademic work settings, and one, Lesley Lundeen, is dedicated to helping MA, MFA, and PhD students in the Humanities. CAPS can advise you on composing the curriculum vitae or resume, mounting a job search, interviewing, and negotiating an offer. Personal counseling is augmented by online resources that range from a one-year plan for MA students to webcasts on creating a powerful resume and on preparing for the academic job market. You can also form connections through the Alumni Careers Network, which joins over 15,000 alumni working across the country and around the world in a vast array of career fields; through on campus recruitment and job fairs held throughout the year; and through the Professor-on-Call section of the Alumni Careers Network (ACN keyword: professor on call), which connects you to alumni who are college and university faculty members. Finally, an extensive career resource center covers topics related to all aspects of professional development.
