SSRC JAPAN PROGRAM DISSERTATION WORKSHOP
Funded by the Japan Foundation, the annual SSRC Japan Studies Dissertation
Workshop seeks to create a sustained network of advanced graduate students
and faculty by providing the opportunity to give and receive critical feedback
prior to and following dissertation fieldwork. It also fosters comparative
and multidisciplinary approaches to research.
The Workshop takes place annually in early January at the Asilomar
Conference Center in Monterey, California and involves 10-12 students and
3-4 faculty. Student participants are asked to write a 10-page paper analyzing
and linking the research projects of all the participants for circulation
prior to the workshop. Dissertation proposals or dissertations-in-progress
are discussed and critiqued.
In most cases SSRC fully covers participants' travel, lodging,
and meals for the duration of the workshop.
ELIGIBILITY: Full-time advanced graduate students, regardless
of citizenship, who are enrolled at U.S. institutions. Applicants must
have an approved dissertation prospectus, but can NOT have completed writing
for final submission. A narrative description of the dissertation topic
and a letter of reference from the student's advisor are required as part
of the application.
Application Deadline (receipt): OCTOBER 1, 1999.
