These are the assignments for Music 15100, Larry Zbikowski's undergraduate harmony course at the University of Chicago, Autumn term 2007. Purchase Brian Hyer’s A Manual for Species Counterpoint, which is available in the Humanities Division's mail room and copy center in Walker 003. The cost is $6.00. And, once you've got it, read pp. 1-30.

  1. Complete the worksheets on species counterpoint distributed in class.
  2. Write first-species counterpoint above and below cantus firmus #19. You will find a collection of cantus firmi (if that’s the correct plural) at the end of the Manual for Species Counterpoint.

An introduction to figured bass; outer-voice counterpoint using chordal inversions; four-part writing over the phrase.
