Description | The University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra and combined choruses culminate their 2016-2017 concert season with a gala presentation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s final symphonic masterpiece: the monumental Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, with its distinctive final movement that incorporates a hybrid version of Friedrich Schiller’s 1785 “Ode to Joy”. Beethoven’s powerful setting has been utilized in recent history both as a protest anthem and as a celebration of music – from the Chilean demonstrations against the Pinochet dictatorship, the Chinese student broadcast at Tiananmen Square, Leonard Bernstein’s performance after the fall of the Berlin Wall, to commemorations after the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Acclaimed Chicago soloists Christine Steyer (soprano), Katherine Calcamuggio (alto), Jesse Donner (tenor), and David Govertsen (bass-baritone) join the 250 musicians on stage for two stirring performances, presented by the Department of Music as the 2017 Cathy Heifetz Memorial Concerts. |
