Academic Year FLAS Abroad

Academic Year FLAS awards may be granted for study-abroad to students in the Division of the Humanities in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of doctoral study upon pre-approval by the Humanities Dean of Students. A student who receives an academic year FLAS to study abroad may be eligible to bank one year of GAI support.
 
A student may apply to hold an academic year FLAS abroad for either language training or dissertation research.  
 
1. For language training abroad, the Dean of Students will consider the following factors:
a) The student requires language training not available at the University of Chicago or advanced language training
b) The student has applied for an academic year FLAS in at least two prior years
c) The student has completed the appropriate milestones in his or her program
d) The student has completed at least half of the GAI teaching obligation
 
A student who receives an academic year FLAS for language training abroad must meet the same coursework and reporting requirements as students who hold the academic year FLAS on campus.  All study abroad must be approved by the US Department of Education prior to departure.  Contact the University FLAS coordinator for specific requirements.
 
2. For dissertation research abroad, the Dean of Students will consider the following factors:
a) The student’s research project abroad will be performed in the target language to facilitate the improvement in the foreign language
b) The student has applied for an academic year FLAS in at least two prior years
c) The student has been admitted to candidacy in his or her program
d) The student has completed at least half of the GAI teaching obligation
 
All study abroad must be approved by the US Department of Education prior to departure.  Contact the University FLAS coordinator for specific requirements.
